Grant pays for wooden garden furniture at sheltered housing

02/09/2010 A grant has paid for new wooden garden furniture at sheltered housing in Swindon.

Retired ladies at George Tweed Gardens applied to the council for a grant for the furniture so they could enjoy tea parties outside, the Swindon Advertiser reported.

They were awarded £700 for their tea group. This enabled them to purchase new tables and chairs for their outdoor seating area.

Around £50,000 is put aside by the council each year to go to small community projects.

Applications are submitted to local councillors before they go to a judging committee.

"The new furniture has gone down very well with the residents and we put on a lovely display which was all prepared by tea club members," Cheryl Orton, who chairs the tea group committee, told the news provider.

As the group was given £700 and the tables and chairs cost £820 in total, the extra money was raised through some fundraising events.
