Garden furniture sets 'should be protected in winter'

12/10/2010 Protecting your garden furniture set is one of the steps that must be taken to prepare your outdoor space for the winter, one expert has suggested.

Writing for the Daily Mail, Martyn Cox explained that hard wood garden furniture sets should be treated with a preservative and placed indoors for the colder, damper months.

There are also steps that can be taken to protect your table and chairs if it has to be left outdoors.

"If you don't have space indoors, or the items are too heavy to move far, lift on to bricks to keep their legs dry and surround with a waterproof cover," Mr Cox recommended.

Plastic garden furniture sets can be left outside, but "tip [it] on its side so that rain runs off", he added.

If you're planning on leaving your table and chairs outdoors in the winter months, then a teak garden furniture set could be your best option.

The Tallahassee Home and Garden blog suggested recently that the wood has "natural anti-weathering properties".  ADNFCR-3488-ID-800111770-ADNFCR
