Garden furniture covers 'not always necessary'

22/10/2010 Those unsure of how to care for their hardwood garden furniture set during the winter have been offered some guidance on the use of covers to protect patio items in wet and freezing conditions.

Garden blogger Owen Jones suggested that whether outdoor furniture needed covering or taking indoors for the colder months depended entirely on what it is made from, where you live and how much effort you are willing to put in.

Mr Jones advised those with a hardwood and texture garden furniture set to move it into a garden shed or garage during the winter if possible, though high-quality wooden items should not typically rot.

Failing this, the expert recommended the use of plastic covers to protect outdoor seating as wet and wild weather ravages the nation's gardens.

"Your garden furniture covers will have to be loose fitting and not restrict air flow too much. This is to safeguard timber furniture against sweating and condensation which could lead to mould, mildew or even rot," he added.

Earlier this month, meanwhile, woodcare company Ronseal suggested that a hardwood garden furniture set could be used all year round.
