Britons encouraged to enjoy 'real' garden furniture

27/07/2010 The National Trust is calling on families to come and enjoy the outdoor living rooms this summer at many of its properties across the country.

A recent study by the organisation found that families spend on average up to 43 hours a week on their sofa. The trust claims that families in the West Midlands and Yorkshire are the worst offenders, spending 50 and 47 hours respectively on the sofa.

In a bid to buck this trend National Trust properties up and down the UK have had green grass living room furniture created in their gardens, including Wimpole Hall near Royston and Little Moreton Hall, near Congleton.

It is hoped that the initiative will encourage families to get off the sofa and into the outdoors to enjoy outdoor activities and days out at many of the trust's venues over the summer.

All the green garden furniture took just over a month to grow and consists of a straw base which has been watered and trimmed before being covered in a blanket of green grass.
