Garden furniture and gas BBQs 'should be protected with approved locks'

21/10/2010 Those of us planning to move our hardwood garden furniture set and gas BBQ indoors as the colder months approach should ensure they are adequately protected, a home insurance expert has warned.

Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive for the British Insurance Brokers' Association (BIBA), said that it is "very important" to safeguard items, including those being stored for the winter.

"The locks you get are important – make sure you've got the industry-approved ones because then you can get a discount on your insurance," he added.

Less than half of homeowners have installed additional window and door locks to protect expensive items, like gas BBQs or a hardwood garden furniture set, according to figures from Mintel.

Mr Trudgill did go on to say, however, that many people are "very mindful" of home security.

The expert suggested having locks professionally fitted and, budget permitting, urged homeowners to consider installing an alarm system to deter thieves further.
