Be aware of food safety when using a gas BBQ

05/08/2010 Food safety should be a top priority for those thinking of cooking on their gas BBQ this summer.

The Irish Independent has highlighted a number of tips for those thinking about indulging in some alfresco dining this summer to ensure that food is stored safely and cooked properly.

Meat, dairy products and anything with mayonnaise in it should be kept in a cool box in the shade and only be brought out to the gas BBQ at the last minute, it advised. Raw foods should also always be kept separate from cooked food to prevent any cross contamination.

"Any minced meat needs to be cooked the whole way through on a BBQ, as bacteria may be mixed throughout the meat. Check by cutting the meat to ensure there is no pink meat and juices run clear," the news paper added.

It's also essential to put utensils away when not in use as not only can these cause bacteria but can also be dangerous for guests ? as pop singer Lily Allen recently discovered.

The singer tweeted last weekend that she injured herself after accidently sitting on BBQ skewers that had been left on her car seat. ADNFCR-3488-ID-800014047-ADNFCR
