Mary Portas criticises garden furniture and plant centres

15/10/2010 Next time you think about sprucing up your outdoor space and investing in a new garden furniture set, your local garden centre might not be the best place to go.

TV presenter Mary Portas, best known for the programme Mary Queen of Shops, has claimed that garden centres often offer their customers very poor standards.

Speaking at the Horticultural Trades Association Garden Futures conference, Ms Portas said: "I've never been to a garden centre where anyone really educated me on what to do with my garden."

She also said that the internet often provides a better resource than garden centres when it comes to educating people about what to do with their outdoor space.

However, Ms Portas did praise some nurseries for their back-to-basics approach.

The comments come shortly after it was revealed that more people are visiting garden centres to purchase plants and garden furniture sets.

Research conducted by the Horticulture Trade Association, reported by Horticulture Week, found there has been a ten per cent increase in people visiting garden centres since 2006.  ADNFCR-3488-ID-800119779-ADNFCR
